Songbook Hedeby

To the tune of 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', written by Owen in around August of 2023

Up to mighty London came
A Viking lad one day,
All the streets were paved with gold,
So everyone was gay!
Singing songs of Canterbury,
York, and Winchester,
'Til Toki got excited and
He shouted to them there:

Chorus:
It's a long way to old Hedeby,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to old Hedeby
To the sweetest goat I know!
Goodbye Canterbury,
Farewell Winchester!
It's a long long way to old Hedeby,
But my heart's right there.

Toki sent a raven
To his Danish Gyda O',
Saying, "Should you not receive it,
Please do let me know!
If I make mistakes in "spelling",
Gyda dear", said he,
"Remember it's the bird, that's bad,
Don't lay the blame on me".

Chorus

Gyda sent a neat reply
To Swedish Toki O',
Saying, "Ulf Ulfsen wants
To marry me, and so
Leave London and Canterbury,
Or you'll be to blame,
For love has fairly drove me silly,
Hoping you're the same!"

Chorus

Extra wartime verse

That's the wrong way to tickle Gyda,
That's the wrong way to kiss!
Don't you know that over here, lad,
They like it best like this!
Hooray pour le Francais!
Farewell, Angleterre!
We didn't know the way to tickle Gyda,
But we learned how, over there!
