is linen or canvas better for making a durable banner? or cotton? it needs to flow artistically, yet not be torn to shreds in the first major wind or tree it encounters…

see this thread (a little way down) for misc ways of dyeing black(ish) that are apparently authentic:
http://livinghistory.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3811&start=0
Suppose it might also have been possible to paint a banner the same as sheilds, and again a grey black isn't too difficult (also in the thread). Whether or not banners were painted is unlikely ever to be know as there don't tend to be extant banners at all, let alone the sort carried to battle.

Personally I'm not sure that Hwicce 'stole' the snakes, but hey ;-)
Plenty of black banners, none authentic, so you choose. Unfortunately, someone chose the two most controversial colours for the group (before my time, not guilty on that one!). Dying to dark blue with woad, then brown with walnut would get near-black. Benedictines and quakers/ shakers/candlestick makers managed it with natural dyes. You could overdye brown with blue for a more realistic colour. The green is equally tricky, and a decent green would normally be woad overdyed with broom/weld, and very expensive. Dylon Dark Green Hand Dye is pretty good, but, err, dark. Woad on it's own can be slightly greeny blue, and the original green was copper-roof-green. Basically, be careful with the green as most off-the-roll green will be glaringly wrong.

There are three authentic banner designs I know of.
The first is a right-angled triangle. It's depicted on a coin and on the Bayeux Tapestry.
The other is the square. It's depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry mainly in the hands of the Normans: the Papal Banner carried for William was a square with a big cross on it. It was really well done at Hastings: http://www.pixures.be/hast/ings5/pages/hst68063.htm
The other is a semi-circle, but I don't like that as much.
http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/banners.shtml has pictures of all three.
Basically, I don't think the precise shape matters that much. The Tapestry shows there's a variety of shapes, that's all that matters.

On the other hand, all of them tend to have tasselly bits on, so I think the Wychwood one should as well.

Oh, and I think we should stick to the classic 3-entwined-round-snakes if possible. Just cos Hwicce stole our design doesn't mean we have to change ;)

I'd say stick to the proper green snakes on black, even if the black is just a brown or grey.
Regarding the shape, I'd say longish would be good, just for the looks. Whether triangular or rectangular I'm not sure, I think both are reasonably authentic. I've been trying to look at bits of the Bayeux tapestry on the web and on the Saxon side there appear to be both what looks like square and triangular banners as well as completely different types, so I wouldn't worry about authenticity in that respect as we can't go too wrong with the shape, I think.
Regarding the size, maybe a metre long, half a metre wide? That would sound about reasonable. Also, we should preferably use a thin material light in weight.
And I think we were there before Hwicce and their snakes are triangular, not round. I don't think we need to worry about that sort of thing. And even if we get confused, so what?

a dark grey will do instead of black, with some decent bright green cloth for the pattern. as long as it is fairly uniform, the snakes will stand out.

alternatively, we could make the banner bright green, with blackish/dark grey/dark blue snakes on it, to lessen the problem of authenticity… might be too controversial though.

dark brown and green also would look OK. in fact, if it were very dark brown, it would look black anyway. maybe some dark grey cloth dyed brown? if we do a brown dye job then i can dye the rest of the gloves at the same time to make them more authenti. likewise for dark grey dyeing. or we could dye the fabric grey then brown (using moden colour fast dyes), and it will look beautiful.
i reckon modern dyes are easiest, cause they look proper, and wont make the fabric prone to staining things when stored, which if it is black/brown will stop things getting black stripes on them. and they are dead easy to use.

how large do we want the banner? 1m square? 2m square? (snakes are round). or a long thin banner with 3 stretched out snakes on it? we don't want to get confused with hwicce…
a triangular banner with the snakes on it?
I reckon a long triangular banner which twirls happily in the air is perfect - sort of artistic…

oh, and i still have woad seeds. if i plant them now, will they grow?

emxx

From Carolyn Priest-Dorman's website - almost-black wool from Haithabu:

Some evidence of brown from walnut shells has also been found, as well as one or two pieces that were intentionally dyed very dark brownish-black with walnut shells and iron (Hägg 1984, 289).

I still really don't believe you can dye linen black with Dark Age dyes.

Yup, yup and yup. I don't think you could make linen true black with natural dyes at all. I think if we do this we'll have to go for dark grey instead of black.

Pagan Mercia reportedly used a banner which had a black field so either a) people did spend that much money on expensive black fabric for banners, or b) for 'black' in sources read 'dark grey.' (IIRC there's been a similar and long-running debate about the meaning of 'red' fabric in contemporary sources…)

Another thought - for making a banner, you don't need to be as careful about the transferability/skin comfort of the colour used as you do for clothing. So *perhaps* something like a mixture of animal fat and charcol/ash could be rubbed into thick linen to blacken it? Not suggesting we do this, mind, just wondering if people did!

With the banner, thought needs to go into the black. If we want to use it in authentic places (Hastings or something?), then the black will need to be authentic.

BUT black isn't very authentic. You can get black sheep, but material made out of their wool tends to be a dark grey with some white bits. Not black-black.

And getting black linen is very hard. Linen is difficult to dye at the best of times, so making it black is Not Easy.

ok people, ferny has admitted to possession of the wychwood paint, and is returning it to oxford as soon as may be (thank you ferny dear)

sooooooooo we can now repaint all the shields. i reckon by adding white emulsion to the vile green shelagh pppp and i found we may be able to match the original wychwood green, or make a new version of it…

also, WW needs a banner. buuuuut to do this i need a sewing machine and some intelligent use of applique (which i can'tdo/have never done). sooooooo anyone out there with knowledge pls let me know!

the result of this is that i feel we need a kit day/evening some time in the new term to sort it all out (new committee hint hint). and large amounts of black and green cloth. will see what i can do to get that before i come up, but if anyone has either WW green or black fabric at home/college, could they let me know please, so i don't buy masses of it unecessarily?

c u all soon!

emxx
