I'd agree with all the above, & leaving after work on Friday evening so workers can come. Saturday & Sunday would be spent touring (unless it turns out that EVERYBODY who wants to come can leave earlier, but that seems unlikely).

No idea how I made the cost £100 earlier in this thread. V is quite right: £70-£80 sounds more like it.

I think yays…. with possible ww contribution towards costs (for reasons outlined to Shelagh in email). I am the only committee member on the Forum it seems :P, but I shall confirm at committee meeting on Wednesday.

My policy as always is that we should go after 5pm, so those with lectures and stuff can come too. I don't really think a leave after 5.30pm could be engineered and it may mean that we don't have as much time to do things… although this is principally up to the driver.

When we know rough overall costs I can email wychwood the details, suggesting the current plan (8-9th of May) and see how much interest there has been.

CADW is the Welsh equivalent of English Heretics. They run lots of castles, abbeys and suchlike in the area. The weekend pass is good value and means we basically wouldn't need to worry about "is it worth paying to get into this castle?". They'll all be open to the public while we're there - we'll just be members of the public. There are heaps of really cool places to visit.

Estimated cost is £65 + food + booze + transport (maybe £30?), that totals just under £100 + consumables

Cheaper if we go in multiple cars not a minibus, but we would then be paying several lots of fuel so I am not sure it would come to that much less overall unless numbers are low - and if we are all in one vehicle, then if we do get lost, at least we will all be lost together, which is much more fun!

I guess any date in Trinity is going to be bad for people with exams, but I am guessing that earlier is better than later?

I am really looking forward to the trip to St Briavels, but it sounds so good that I think if we try to make the best of a bad set of circumstances - Va dn Bunni not being there, Shelagh struugling to go, and so on, then we'll spoil it by trying to rush it, so let's wait until next term and enjoy it properly. BTW, how's the brewery trip going on? Is it still in the frame or has it fallen meekly by the wayside? If so, can we pick it up and dust it down, or has it utterly forsaken itself to dark despair? Sniffle.

Anyway, those are my not-terribly-coherent thoughts for your pondering.

How was your birthday, Shelagh?

St Briavels does indeed sound great, although I think it might be better for next term. Clashing with the market could be a problem for people who need to make kit before York. Having said that, the May dates may clash fith finals…

We should probably try to avoid clashes with DAS events anyway, to allow cross-over. They're a resource for us (pre-organised cool events with jazzy people) if we want to use them, so I think we should where possible, or at least not have a conflict of events.

What's CADW? Would it be closed access to others while we're there, or is it free coz anyone can do what they want there? I presume the former given the discussion about what we'd do there.

Estimate total cost of weekend £65+food and booze? Shelagh?

Just looked at the online availability for St Briavels. In May we can have 8-9 or 22-23. Total cost per person for 2 nights B&B is just under £40. A weekend pass to visit CADW sites is £11.50 and will let us visit lots and lots of cool places. Plus cost of minibus & fuel.

I think mini-mysteries after markets work well, they're a nice addition to the day and attention spans cope with mini-adventures pretty well. As such, I'd suggest including one after the market, and if we were to do the brewery, after that too. I wouldn't vote for a whole day of it, but if i were free would come along if that did happen.

I think St Briavels sounds amazing. I think we HAVE to do it. I think we should make a really big event of it, and that for one weekend only it should rival Hauksby. And having been on the committee (like most of Old Wychwood) I know how much effort goes into organising events and keeping the society running smoothly, so I think they have the prerogative to date events to suit them as well as the society. It would be a huge shame to try and have a big event there and not have you guys present, and to do it twice so soon after the other might make both events smaller. I'd vote to have a full excursion to St Briavels next term. But sodding well book a weekend I can go!

So we have three options to choose between:
- On the 7th Feb (3rd week) do a standard one-day mystery trip, a visit to interesting old places near(ish) Oxford. Expect churches, stone circles, all that sort of thing.
- On the 7th Feb (3rd week) do a shortened one-day mystery trip combined with a trip to the Wychwood brewery.
- On the weekend of the 28th Feb (6th week) do a several day trip including an overnight stay in a castle (St Briavels). But V & I are at her sister's wedding that weekend, so would miss it :( Also, this clashes with the re-enactor's market (which also normally features a short mystery trip to some stone circles or whatever).

Place bets now!

If we end up doing the Mystery Weekend to St Briavels next term, we need to sort out which weekend. Probably near the start, so as to not clash with exams? But then it'll be quite close to Hauksby… What do people think?
If we're doing a single day Mystery Trip, we could do Stonehenge/Silbury/West Kennet? Haven't been that way for a while.

EDIT:
Cai thinks the castle looks awesome but can't make the 28th, and would prefer the standard non-brewery mystery trip on the 7th (Option 1).
Candy thinks they all look good, but that combining Brewery and Mystery might be a bit rushed (so wants Option 1 or 3).

I'd be a bit gutted if you couldn't make the trip. Trinity is ok for me, but I think we should book it in asap because weekends in the summer will get booked up even sooner than ones in Feb. However if the Will Of The People is to go to Wales w'e of the 28th then I am happy to go along with that. And I'd be happy to do brewery/mystery on the 7th Feb if that's what WW wants to do.

And kit makings in 0th/9th week if people are still around.

Talking of Hauksby, I think I will add that to the termcard so that people will know about it in advance.

Penny, if you can host the video evening you can chose the night ;)… well done for getting on the forum so quickly btw :D

P.S.
I'm in the process of getting minibus trained, hopefully at some point early next term I should be an approved driver.

Would it be possible not to have the video evening on a Tuesday? Ignore me if that works out as the best day for everyone else, but on an average Tuesday evening I'm already triple booked.

My house could be used for kit making, I have a big living room.

I can't do the weekend of the 6th - 8th February, which is a shame as I would like to do the trip, particularly if two minibus drivers would be preferred. There's also one weekend in March I can't do, though I'm not sure when yet; other than that it's all provisionally ok I think, including doing the craft day, coppicing and market trips.

Mystery Trip 6-8 Feb - yes I can do this
Coppicing 14 Feb - could possibly do this but would prefer it if you can get another driver
Craft Day 21 Feb - not good for me
National Living History Fair 28 Feb - yes I can do this

I suggest if we go to St Briavels, we have a mini-banquet, i.e. vaguely authentic dinner in kit - since we'd have to have supper anyway, let's make something of it. However it is a Youth Hostel and we'd need to be more careful than usual about behaviour/alcomahol as it would be a shame to be barred from the YHA. Would suggest costing it up and mailing folk to see who's up for it. Also checking with YHA that they can fit in 10-ish people that weekend.

Apparently I am German and fun….

If possible, we should think about having two craft days, one for hard and one for soft kit. It's Hauksby coming up during Easter, so people need to get their kit into shape. Of course, there's already a lot on the termcard, so I don't know how feasible that is.

The Castle Trip could be a good idea, although if it's a whole weekend probably fewer people will be coming, so having the feast then would be unfair to all those who can't afford taking a weekend off. And when it comes to real mysteries, there's always the post-market drive, although this does of course greatly limit the places where we could go.

Ppppppppppppp

Freya has a jigsaw, if she's available. Witty has rivets (amongst other things) which sounded useful though, so it would still be useful to either get stuff off him before the event or have him attend (which would be ideal not just because of his presence, but coz of storage and payment issues too). But I'd say last terms crafts day was pretty successful, even if we didn't get shields and shizzle done, so the date can be a fixture regardless of Witty.

We do love you Paul, this is all just make-do talk for if you can't make it, but please do.

Also, RE: Mystery Trip. If it's St. Briavels Castle for a weekend, while it defeats the explicit nature of Mystery, I think that would need organising more openly. So - do we want to do it? I remember discussing it at the Railway Museum outside of Cannok and it sounded awesome to me. Also, Usk with Regia was a brilliant setting and a great event, lots of fun, so if WW could have an event of that ilk, I'd be all for it!

To add another layer of difficulty (if we go) - would we want to hold either the or a Feast there? Like a medieval banquet? Like cooking at Hauksby, but more so (or at least, more concentrated)? Just asking…

Ferny :D

I have a power drill (hurrah for Christmas), so we could now do more hard crafts if we have a day then, whether or not we get Paul W.

Although an electric saw would be also be useful.

Thanks for putting the coppicing on - I'll provisionally book it for that date. Drivers, is anyone able to volunteer for that weekend? I may be driving by then, but as ever, there's no guarantees.

RE: brewery trip, there's space at the end of 1st week, or before the fire sat 2nd week, or instead of mystery trip (if that were to fold) end of 3rd week. But it would need confirmation of numbers and booking in advance (I'm not sure how far in advance tho). Again, it would need drivers (probably minibus). I'd suggest Sam to arrange details if he wants to.

RE: crafts day - Claire and I will only be able to arrive late (after 2pm) as we have a training day then. However, I am keen to do crafts, so I will be there as soon as possible. Paul, can you confirm that date or suggest another?

Ferny
