We may need a pre=craft day to prepare some of the materials.

There is also mutterings of a post crafts day to repair/maintain materials, possibly over the vac.

I guess this is on the back burner coz of the feast, but post feast we really need to push the organisation on this…(says he who;s happily not on the committee)

Am assuming Jon meant 2440x1220, but now I want a non-Euclidean shield! It might stop Alex the Bristolian from magically bending his blade around the edge of my kite and smacking me on the arse when I least expect it…

Yeah, I'm a bit intrigued, too. Is this meant to be 244mm planks, having a proper plank shield? Well, if you're planning to be authentic, at least go for linden wood or so. Or is this to be some sort of non-Euclidean shield? I think you're better off with a larger sheet of plywood from which you can cut out your shield without bending space-time.
I made mine from a 1000mmx1000mmx9mm, cutting it down to something in the 800mm diameter region. I got it for just under 10 pounds from Powell's, so slightly more expensive. Hence if many people want to make shields, large sheets are to be recommended.

I also have a large can of black paint left, which I'd be willing to give to Wychwood in exchange for minor reimbursement (cost me 12 pounds I think and it's still over 3/4 full). Unfortunately, my red paint appears to have disappeared over the summer. Oh well.

If you're planning on a fancy and detailed pattern, then I recommend the cardboard cutout technique. It worked well for me. Cut out a 1:1 scale model of your shield (or a quarter/half/whatever part of your shield if it's going to be symmetrical) from cardboard and draw your design on that. Cut out the bits to be coloured in (leaving "bridges" occassionally in order to stop the cardboard to fall apart), place it on your shield and draw along the edges of the gaps with pencil. The paint it. This way you can afford to make mistakes when getting your design into full size.

Yes, I am a rather fetching shade of green ;) I also have a jig saw, so if the craft day were to be on a day I could be around, I could bring it with me.

800mm shields out of a 244mm sheet? Ferny, you're pushing messiah territory there.

Below is logistics list from Jon for shields. Lets start rounding up what we need.

I've been playing with bits of paper, a ruler and a compass (always fun for the Nump), and have reached the following conclusions;
Standard ply sheets are 244mm by 122mm
They cost £20 from B&Q; probably cheaper from Jewsons.
You can get 3 big (just under 800mm diameter, my big white shield) from one sheet, as well as 6 bucklers (400mm diameter). So £5-6 for a biggie, 50p-£1 for a small.
You can also get 6 small (640mm diameter, a bit bigger than Robyn's) along with a couple of large bucklers (460mm). So £3-£3.50 each?
You can also get 5 medium (780mm diameter, about my brown shield) plus a couple of bucklers. So about £4 each.
We would also need hod-loads of fabric- about £4 per metre for cotton or £5-6 for linen, which does seem to last better (pers. obs.). So add somewhere between £2 and £5 for fabric.
10l of PVA glue will set you back around £13
Doggy chew- prob best left to individuals as quite time consuming, and best done when all dry (glue and paint).
I'd aim to get all blanks cut and covered, and leave painting and doggy chew as homework/next 2 weeks.
So total cost in the region of;
Big shield- £12
Medium shield- £9
Small shield- £6
Buckler- £4

Still to buy- paint, Doggy chew (£3), tin tacks (or sew it on!), Boss (£6).
Total cost £20-£13

I don't know what Wychwood has in the way of paint, but I think it has some. A tin is around £6. If a couple of people wanted Hwitmearum colours instead, we could probably donate the paint. Hint hint. It's still the green, matches Freya, and gives you two sides for shows!

Hope it all makes sense and is useful. Does WW still have a jigsaw? If not, can anyone check the Quatermaster's stock-list inventory to see when/where it went?
