Check out 2:45 on this video - US riot police showing how intimidating the shield bash. It's the first time I've seen footage of police doing this:

http://www.infowars.com/police-brutality-in-pittsburgh-after-the-g20/

I've never seen them form interlocking shieldwalls either, I think generally their shields are too small and they don't need to because they're generally not actually under attack. Anyone know if this occurs in modern day shieldwalls at all?

Different force, but I know the MET don't pull their blows :(. Maybe I could train them to be pacifist combatants? Dunno how long they'd have held Senlac hill with <s>hippies</s> domestic extremists like us holding it:

1:37 - http://london.indymedia.org.uk/videos/993

I thought I wouldn't vent on the maillist full of freshers :)

I'm starting to research a character who is a nun in the time of Alfred the Great (late 9th Century). Initially she will be a widow who has become a novice, because I don't know enough to portray a full nun. But the idea is to explore women's scholarship and attitudes within the church of the day, and gradually develop a "geeky", educated woman who is truly called to monastic life. I would very much welcome any ideas, comments, information etc. from anybody else, and if anybody else fancies doing a nun (if you see what I mean) that would be fantastic.

I know almost nothing about the subject, as I have studied Viking women and history much more. The idea is that the new nun will be a contemporary of my Viking woman, Ingibjorg, originating from the area where Ingibjorg now lives, but with very different attitudes.

I've created a page on the wiki for notes/research/reading list.

http://wychwood.wikidot.com/kit-nun-character

I know a lot of you may feel that this idea is rather redundant, but I'm beginning to come round more and more to the idea.

Some ex-wwers have expressed an interest in an occasional update in what's going on but do not want the general clutter of the list. This list would be set up PURELY FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO REGULARLY ATTEND WYCHWOOD (i.e. it won't tell you venues of kit making etc)

It would:
- Send 1 email a term giving the dates of the fire, feast and perhaps one or two other interesting events (eg market, mystery trip)
- Inform people about special out of the ordinary events such as the upcoming trip to St Briavels, as well as the dates for York and Tintagel

It would NOT:
- Have any so called 'SPAM' or emails from anyone other than the committee
- Always contain precise details about events

Why this is a good idea:
- It would make feast organisation etc easier
- We would not alienate some of the old gits
- We would have more old gits at the bigger events which might be nice :D

Why this is a bad idea:
- Current wychwood members may join this list and therefore not know about regular wychwood meetings - more work for committee?
- Involves complex admin and setting up, which I have no idea how to do.

PLEASE DISCUSS, COMMENT, ARGUE, TELL ME I'M VERY WRONG ETC

Answers on a postcard. This is in relation to Jam's overly long request for unity and solidarity between our two universities.

V el Presidente says: Aye.
Freya el not a university members says: Aye.
Ferny el Old Git says: Aye Aye.

That's quorum (meh, might be), and president says so, so there. I think more members are always a good thing, and inclusiveness is something which I pride Wychwood on.

Possible problems so far suggested:
whether it would affect the University's public liability insurance policy for societies (Freya)
location of future events (V).

People can post here if they agree, but all we really need to know (quite urgently) is if anyone disagrees, how strongly, and why.

But the power of free speech presented to us by the internet could topple our glorious dictatorship. If you object, say. Your views may be considered ;).

Ferny

Wondered if anyone might be interested in submitting any work to this?

Dear All,
The deadline for submitting articles for the next issue of the Journal of
the Oxford University History Society (JOUHS – issue 6, Michaelmas 2008) has
been extended to 17th November.
As usual, the editors are happy to consider research articles, essays, book
reviews, conference papers as well as reviews of exhibitions and conferences.
We also consider reports on ongoing research, in the form of snapshots of
research, and bibliographical checklists.
As we have decided to increasingly reflect the activities of the OUHS, we
are particularly interested in this occasion to receive proposals for
interviews or reports of the lectures scheduled by the society for this term,
including DAVID STARKEY (week 2), CHRISTOPHER BROWN (week 3), CLAIRE TOMALIN
(week 5), PHILIPPA GREGORY (week 6).
If you have not visited our journal before, do it now!
The Journal of the Oxford University History Society was established by the
postgraduate community at Oxford as a medium for the publication and
dissemination of original and inter-disciplinary historical research. It is an
on-line peer-reviewed scholarly journal run by postgraduate students under the
aegis of the Oxford University History Society (OUHS). It aims to: reflect the
activities and interests of OUHS; establish scholarly links in the varied
community of historians at the University of Oxford; to serve as a discussion
forum for the international community of undergraduates, postgraduate students
and established academics. We welcome submissions from undergraduates,
graduates and scholars from both within and outside Oxford.
Best wishes,
Heather Ellis and Graciela Iglesias Rogers
Co-editors JOUHS

Email: moc.liamg|ofnishuoj#moc.liamg|ofnishuoj

Clearly we have a lot of stuff. And soon neither Dom nor Freya can continue storing stuff.

Hence:
- we need somewhere to keep Wychwood feasting equipment/extra soft kit/random bits
- we need somewhere to store the stuff needed for bp
And we need solutions for:
- next term
- the summer
- next year

Considerations:
- the nunnery is very convenient for bp stuff. With Dom moving out, there is still Cai left and potentially Chris in the summer etc. Is there hope to keep the cupboard?
- next year I have a house and will probably have space for the feasting stuff etc., but only from August or September onwards.

So, ideas?

Is there any way we can promote ourselves to schools more? Doing displays and workshops for the kids is always fun for all, and we earn some small change for our coffers, which is good!

If we do…I've started reading ALL the local papers lately as part of my jobsearch, and I came accross an article about roman reenactors having done a school show. It was a teeny article with a biggish pic. I thought we could offer to either submit an article, or have a writer come out to the schools and try to get some more exposure through local papers as well as student ones, see if we can get some school snowballing going on…

I just found a leaflet I picked up at TORM from a woodcarver who makes bowls, plates, spoons, and according to the pictures on his leaflet, forks and axe handles.

He offers carving classes for groups of 6-8 people, from £50/person/day, price includes wood and knife. He's based in the Peak District. I thought I'd post this to see if anyone was interested before throwing out the leaflet, I can't justify that price but it might be a nice event for others.

Details at www.robin-wood.co.uk

I put his site up on the wiki under vendors for his work anyway, but there's no mention of this course there.

Ferny

I have been wondering about revamping the website at
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~wychwood

This is for the following reasons:
a) We have tons of new and sexy photos we could put up there
b) Material could be better shared out and synchronised between the website and the Wiki
c) It generally looks in need of a spring clean

So what I'd like to put to you for consideration is this:
Shall I change the website to be much more slimmed down and geared towards promoting Wychwood, with users directed to the Wiki for info on costume, history etc.? Editing and adding to the Wiki is much quicker and easier than editing the website and can be done by any member. Any information lost from the website would be moved to the Wiki rather than deleted (e.g. the poetry on the fires page).

In essence, the website would say: "we are Wychwood, this is what we do, here's how to find us, here's some basic info on our period and over there is our wiki for detailed articles."

Please let me know what you think. What needs to be kept/lost? Do you like the layout and colourscheme? How good does it look to prospective members/people who might hire us? Bear in mind that it comes up pretty high in Google searches for reenactment in the UK/Oxfordshire and for Anglo-Saxon stuff, so lots of people see it (we usually get around 200 hits a week, almost all from outside Oxford).

At the NLHF I talked to a guy called Dariusz Wiewiórka (he's Polish, I think, judging by his email address ending in .pl). Actually, he started talking to me first because I was wearing the Wychwood t-shirt and he'd been on our website and identified us as a group who is more than average interested in authenticity. He's been working with several museums, among them the Viking museum in Stockholm and is a professional when it comes to authentic reconstruction of Viking archaeology.
Anyway, we got chatting and he said that, sometime when he's in England again (which is twice a year normally), he'd be happy to chat to our group about reconstructing Viking (and to some extent also Saxon) life/kit/etc. What do people think about this? I think it would be a great opportunity, and it's allways good to have contacts as well.
Obviously he also sells stuff, although it's worth pointing out that for every item he sells, he can tell you exactly where the original was found etc. If you're interested, his website is www.nordulf.net.
I've got his full contact details, in case we decide to invite him to allow us to partake in his wisdom. Of course, he can't promise that he'll be able to make it when it just suits us, but he seemed optimistic that we should find a time. Next time he'll be in England is, I think, February (around the time of the next NLHF, incidentally).

So what does everyone think about this?

(Notice also that he has a link from his website to ours! Even though he got the address wrong, so it's not working, which I shall mention to him when I contact him anyway)

having decided that a trebuchet isn't going to happen, at least for a while, I decided to have a good at other ways for chucking rocks at things, and went for a pole sling. This is basically a trebuchet arm that the user swings himself.

Having finally got the oppertunity to test it (at Devons training) the following happened:
1. I swung the thing forward, and the sling released
2. we waited.
3. we waited a bit more…
4. we were still waiting when it began to occur to me that something had gone wrong
5. There was a crashing sound as the shot landed in a tree twenty feet to my right, at about 90 degrees to the direction it was supposed to go.

A bit later with a different sling, with stones weight somewhere around 25g I was about to get maybe 80 yards range (more with a bigger one).
The best bit about the polesling is the whirring sound it makes when the release works properly.
Anyway, I shall hopefully be trying it with a solid rubber ball and some more ammunition tommorrow. I might even hit the target again…

So…. any one else interested in the fine art of primitive seige-slings? (they might even be in period…)

Also any suggestion for safe projectiles to lob at people? I'm geussing that a rubber ball might really hurt…

Hi people, after Shelagh kindly introduced me to DAS last weekend, I'm now a member. I've joined the Beorcire [Berkshire] unit, which is based between Dorchester and Uffington [Kind of appropriate for us don'tcha think?]. we're rather low on members in that unit, so any saxons who would like to join a fun group concentrating on spear and shield [or two-handed spear for the ladies], come along to the next event - you can do one event without joining i think [if Godfrid or Ingiborg could confirm this t'would be handy]. It's at Holmbury St. Mary in Surry, I'd suggesting aking Shelagh for more info if you're interested…

the group also does vikings if you'd prefer, although I'd like you in Beorcire…
