Leather comes by mail order from Le Prevo, who are excellent.
Bowls come from markets/Tintagel.

What you can get in London is:

Wool and linen - shops on Goldsworth Road. Take the tube to Goldsworth Road. Walk out of the exit. Look across the road. Just to the right of the Shepherds Bush Market entrance (as you look at it) there is Classic Textiles. Upstairs for wool, down for linen. There are other good shops up and down that bit of road also.

Handweavers Studio in North London. The only place to get weaving yarns. An amazing selection of wool, silk, linen etc etc etc. They have recently moved so check their new location and opening times on their website (search for Handweavers Studio).

Beads - you could try the obvious shop in Camden.

I repeatedly wonder how well a modern police shield wall would do against a real round-shield type shield wall with interlocking shields and spears and all. I'm also surprised protesters don't ever form one. Maybe we could invite the Oxford police force to BP sometime, or visit them near the animal lab and challenge them (while making perfectly clear that this is for training only and they should damn well pull their blows or our safety officer (whoever that is) will have to have a word with them).

Check out 2:45 on this video - US riot police showing how intimidating the shield bash. It's the first time I've seen footage of police doing this:

http://www.infowars.com/police-brutality-in-pittsburgh-after-the-g20/

I've never seen them form interlocking shieldwalls either, I think generally their shields are too small and they don't need to because they're generally not actually under attack. Anyone know if this occurs in modern day shieldwalls at all?

Different force, but I know the MET don't pull their blows :(. Maybe I could train them to be pacifist combatants? Dunno how long they'd have held Senlac hill with <s>hippies</s> domestic extremists like us holding it:

1:37 - http://london.indymedia.org.uk/videos/993

I thought I wouldn't vent on the maillist full of freshers :)

I'd love to read Wulfhild's story. And yes, I will have to learn some prayers etc. in Latin. Do you have any suggestions? In particular stuff that would be useful in a social situation.

This is kind of a long-term project for me but I'm enjoying beginning to read up on the subject.

I expect my character will be a wealthy widow, with connections dating from her time as a successful merchant's wife.

There's a page on religious clothing here:
http://wychwood.wikidot.com/kit-religious
Also, I enjoyed reading through this PDF, by a modern Benedictine nun:
http://sacredfaith.org/benedictine.aspx

Somewhere I have notes for my abbess character, which I can dig out at a later date. I think the main thing I'd say at this point is: don't forget that the class system permeated into the monasteries. A nun who brought her own money and land when she took the veil would enjoy a much easier life, and have more power, than her sisters who brought little or nothing. A noble nun would not expect to be assigned menial chores or housework.

I plan on bringing Abbess Wulfhild back from time to time - hopefully she will be swinging a censer and blessing the troops next Hastings! I started writing her story a while ago, so I'll see how far I got and post it here if it's any use. For me the interest lies in portraying a literate, educated person. The important thing for this, however, is that it will require learning a bit of Latin… enough to say a few prayers and blessings, anyway. (Interesting fact: Latin remains the legal language of Great Britain. If you cannot read and write Latin, you are technically illiterate).

I'm starting to research a character who is a nun in the time of Alfred the Great (late 9th Century). Initially she will be a widow who has become a novice, because I don't know enough to portray a full nun. But the idea is to explore women's scholarship and attitudes within the church of the day, and gradually develop a "geeky", educated woman who is truly called to monastic life. I would very much welcome any ideas, comments, information etc. from anybody else, and if anybody else fancies doing a nun (if you see what I mean) that would be fantastic.

I know almost nothing about the subject, as I have studied Viking women and history much more. The idea is that the new nun will be a contemporary of my Viking woman, Ingibjorg, originating from the area where Ingibjorg now lives, but with very different attitudes.

I've created a page on the wiki for notes/research/reading list.

http://wychwood.wikidot.com/kit-nun-character

Yeah, I know I'm anything but an old git, but I'll be based outside Oxford (and in fact England) and next academic year probably won't be joining as a paid member, unless I can find a LOT of excuses to have meetings in Oxford on Mondays.

I've stayed on the mailing list for a couple of my Bristol societies and quite like hearing all the spam and gossip. Obviously if people do say they'd prefer to be on that list create it, I was just registering a lack of interest despite being the kind of person who in theory might want it and pointing out various ways in which multiple mailing lists can work other than what appears to be the Oxford convention of a temporary freshers one and a proper one.

The idea is that it is for Old Gits who don't want constant Wychwood emails, but do want some ideas of what's going on. The sort of people who came to the 20th Anniversary Feast, for example.

Since I joined Wychwood there have been a handful of us who've hung Oxford around lots and stuck on the main list whilst there's a much larger group who'd probably want to come back for some things, if they knew what was on, but can't neccessarily handle all of the hundreds of emails. People like Emily, Amelia, Shreena, Manny, Emily, Heid, Ross…

Obviously no-one will be forced onto the Old Git lists!

As someone who is soon to be in the target audience, I would have no interest in joining it. Partly I just like to stay in the loop and feel like I'm still part of a social group rather than just have a soulless informative termly email, but also if I end up in Oxford at short notice it's useful to have detailed information on what's going on, even for very minor events. For example, if I happen to be in Oxford on a night when someone has randomly spammed the main WW mailing list saying they're going to the pub I'd rather to the pub than just be bored for the evening.

There might be people who think it's a great idea in which case go ahead and create it, but if everyone feels the same as I do there's not much point.

An alternative solution I've seen a society do (then scrap when they turned into a bunch of dullards) is have the main mailing list not far off your suggestion of this new one, a second one with more detailed information on events for people who actually turn up rather than just signed up at fresher's fair, and a third one for general fun chatter barely relevent (if at all) to the society.

I know a lot of you may feel that this idea is rather redundant, but I'm beginning to come round more and more to the idea.

Some ex-wwers have expressed an interest in an occasional update in what's going on but do not want the general clutter of the list. This list would be set up PURELY FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO REGULARLY ATTEND WYCHWOOD (i.e. it won't tell you venues of kit making etc)

It would:
- Send 1 email a term giving the dates of the fire, feast and perhaps one or two other interesting events (eg market, mystery trip)
- Inform people about special out of the ordinary events such as the upcoming trip to St Briavels, as well as the dates for York and Tintagel

It would NOT:
- Have any so called 'SPAM' or emails from anyone other than the committee
- Always contain precise details about events

Why this is a good idea:
- It would make feast organisation etc easier
- We would not alienate some of the old gits
- We would have more old gits at the bigger events which might be nice :D

Why this is a bad idea:
- Current wychwood members may join this list and therefore not know about regular wychwood meetings - more work for committee?
- Involves complex admin and setting up, which I have no idea how to do.

PLEASE DISCUSS, COMMENT, ARGUE, TELL ME I'M VERY WRONG ETC

Wondered if anyone might be interested in submitting any work to this?

Dear All,
The deadline for submitting articles for the next issue of the Journal of
the Oxford University History Society (JOUHS – issue 6, Michaelmas 2008) has
been extended to 17th November.
As usual, the editors are happy to consider research articles, essays, book
reviews, conference papers as well as reviews of exhibitions and conferences.
We also consider reports on ongoing research, in the form of snapshots of
research, and bibliographical checklists.
As we have decided to increasingly reflect the activities of the OUHS, we
are particularly interested in this occasion to receive proposals for
interviews or reports of the lectures scheduled by the society for this term,
including DAVID STARKEY (week 2), CHRISTOPHER BROWN (week 3), CLAIRE TOMALIN
(week 5), PHILIPPA GREGORY (week 6).
If you have not visited our journal before, do it now!
The Journal of the Oxford University History Society was established by the
postgraduate community at Oxford as a medium for the publication and
dissemination of original and inter-disciplinary historical research. It is an
on-line peer-reviewed scholarly journal run by postgraduate students under the
aegis of the Oxford University History Society (OUHS). It aims to: reflect the
activities and interests of OUHS; establish scholarly links in the varied
community of historians at the University of Oxford; to serve as a discussion
forum for the international community of undergraduates, postgraduate students
and established academics. We welcome submissions from undergraduates,
graduates and scholars from both within and outside Oxford.
Best wishes,
Heather Ellis and Graciela Iglesias Rogers
Co-editors JOUHS

Email: moc.liamg|ofnishuoj#moc.liamg|ofnishuoj
